A global brand strategy, design and experience firm is looking to hire a freelance Associate Strategy Director for their LA office. 


Hourly Pay Rate: $90 - $110 based on experience

Our ideal Associate Strategy Director candidate is:

  • A brand evolver and strategic dot connector
  • Can think in terms of 18-month time horizons
  • Loves mining research for insights to create compelling strategy recommendations; Consults on go-forward research objectives and questions
  • Confident with portfolio/architecture questions -- the ability to drive first-order questions into second-order implications for naming, identity, messaging


Both a brand strategist and a relationship builder

  • Leads strategy projects as well as routinely converses/consults on strategic questions
  • Relishes being the strategic “through-line” with Research, Design, Comms, Experience, Brand-led change, and Activation practices
  • Loves strategic co-creation, e.g. internal jams, client workshops, collaborations with other agency partners.

Scope of work:

  • Build corporate-level brand strategies and positioning recommendations for a range of clients
  • Direct and conduct competitive audits, desk research, client interviews, and integration with primary research
  • Simplify findings and recommendations to create compelling stories; translate great conceptual ideas into actionable, ‘real–world’ ideas
  • Work collaboratively to create strategic recommendations that integrate research, design, experience, industry knowledge, and client knowledge
  • Recognize nuances that define each client and know how to integrate into work approach
  • Identify/anticipate core issues and help clients and teams address them
  • Establish solid relationship with mid-senior level members of client team (i.e. Director and VP levels); direct client meetings and presentations (depending on size)
  • Identify opportunities to extend client business
  • Provide unscripted strategic counsel—can ‘think on your feet’ without disrupting strategic direction
  • Write proposals and assemble work plans for new business opportunities and extensions of existing business
  • Take an active role in shaping/developing culture by leading/participating in firm-building activities
  • Frame branding solutions in terms of business impact

You’re a great fit for this position if you have:

  • A strong desire to create and contribute to an inclusive environment
  • 7+ years agency experience; or an advanced degree and 3–5 years agency experience
  • Fluency in all core strategy subjects and deep expertise in 1–2 areas, such as: brand positioning, brand architecture, employee engagement, implementation
  • Significant exposure to multiple industries with in-depth knowledge of 2–3 industries
  • B2B client experience
  • Ability to simplify
  • Deep digital expertise
  • Must be able to travel (approximately 25% of time, mostly domestic. Some overnight trips required).
